Plant Protein vs Whey Protein - Which is better?

Protein powders have become a staple for anyone looking to supplement an active lifestyle, add extra protein to their diet or simply looking for a delicious snack in between meals.
Vegan Protein Powders are increasingly becoming popular amongst supplement users who have specific dietary requirements or favour a more sustainable alternative to Whey.
We compared the two protein powders, put them to the test so that you decide which of these might be best for you!

What is Whey Protein?

Whey protein powder is an animal-based product and a by-product of the cheese-making industry. Whey protein begins as cow’s milk, which naturally contains two types of protein, casein and whey. During the process of making cheese, the milk is coagulated and curdled as a result of an enzymatic reaction. The rise of temperature splits the milk into curds (casein) and allows the whey to be separated. The liquid whey then undergoes a series of filtering and drying steps which creates the powder which we all know as whey protein.

What is Plant Protein?

Plant-based protein powders are rapidly gaining popularity amongst supplement users who struggle to digest whey protein powders and those with animal welfare/environmental concerns. Vegan protein powders are commonly blended from legumes, seeds, rice and grains. The most popular being pea and rice! Vegan protein powder are commonly produced using an ultrafiltration process which relies on a mostly mechanical process to grind the raw ingredients into a fine flour. The protein precipitates are then separated using centrifugal force, leaving a highly concentrated protein isolate behind.
Plant-based protein powders have advanced in recent years and no longer have that nauseating chalky texture, making them a true delicious and sustainable alternative to whey protein. Whey and Plant Protein powders are both proven supplements for muscle growth and weight-loss. Whey protein powders are generally more cost-effective, although Plant-based Proteins are easier to digest and more allergy friendly. At Pro Scoop we gravitate to more sustainable protein sources and favour Plant-based Protein powders as they have a significantly lower carbon foot when compared to animal-based/ Whey Protein Powders. As a more sustainable protein source, Plant-based Proteins are also usually packaged in more eco-friendly materials and will often exclude single-use plastic scoops from their packaging. At Pro Scoop we’ve designed the world’s first shaker bottle with a built-in, reusable scoop to facilitate these more sustainable options, making it easier for you to scoop these delicious and sustainable protein powders.
