Do I need a Mixer Ball for my Shaker Bottle? What is their purpose?

Different names.

Mixer ball, Spring ball, Whisk ball, Agitator ball, Blender ball, Shaker Bottle ball. These little balls have many different names, however they all serve the same purpose, which is to increase the speed at which protein/powdered supplements blend together with liquid.

How do I use the mixer ball?

Begin by simply filling your shaker bottle with your chosen liquid and powdered supplement of choice. Drop the mixer ball in to your bottle, secure the lid and begin shaking vigorously! You should hear and feel the mixer ball bouncing around within the liquid whilst shaking. Pop the closure open and enjoy a velvety smooth drink!

How do they blend supplements?

Mixer balls are designed to agitate and disturb liquid to encourage the powdered particles to mix and disperse as quickly as possible. The coiled spring allows enough liquid to pass through it while at the same time breaking down stubborn clumps of protein. A good comparison is a standard mixing whisk used to whisk eggs. The whisk helps to break up the yolk and blend with the egg white to great a smooth and consistent mixture. A mixer ball for a protein drink acts in a very similar fashion, however the spherical shape is better suited to a bottle shape.

  • Blends supplement drinks with very little effort leaving no clumps behind.
    Affordable and quick blending mechanism.
    Indestructible and will not rust.
The same mixer ball will work for most shaker bottles.

  • Time consuming to clean as clumps can get caught within the spring.
Many powdered supplements/protein blend completely fine without the need for a mixer ball.
Many mixer balls end up the bin and contribute to landfill as many people don’t have a need for them, which is why we sell these as an optional accessory.

Why is my mixer ball not helping?

There’s a number of reasons why your mixer ball may not be correctly blending your drinks.

1. Not enough liquid.
You may need to check that your ratio of liquid or protein/powder is correct. For example if you have mixed 3 scoops of protein into 150mLs of water you will be left with a very thick consistency. If the protein drink becomes too thick the mixer ball will compress under the weight of the liquid and no longer serve any purpose. In this instance, you may need to either add more water, reduce the amount of protein, or simply make 2 separate batches to reduce the load on the mixer ball.

2. Poor shaker bottle design.
Many shaker bottles have sharp corners and edges which don’t allow the mixer ball to reach and blend the problematic areas. Sharp corners are difficult to clean, but also encourage powdered supplements to get caught and wedged into difficult to reach areas. We suggest using a bottle which has generous corners which helps to facilitate correct supplement blending. At Pro scoop we’ve designed a protein shaker bottle which ensures you can properly blend and drink velvety smooth supplements in seconds. The pentagonal shaped cup naturally helps to agitate liquid, which when compounded with a mixer ball will leave you drinking a delicious and clump free supplement drink.

3. Supplement choice.
Some supplements, depending on their production haven’t had sufficient filtration and preparation which make them difficult to blend. In this instance the powder will be inherently clumpy and can’t be blended to a smooth consistency. If you’re searching for a delicious and easy-to-blend protein alternative, we stock a range of premium plant-based supplements.

4. Moisture in Packaging.
It’s always good practice to ensure that you correctly close/re-seal your supplements after opening the packaging. The packaging serves as a barrier against moisture from getting into the powder, so it’s really important that you close the lid tightly or seal the zip-lock all the way. If moisture gets into your supplements it essentially begins the ‘blending’ process prematurely and will start clumping before you’ve even started mixing in your shaker bottle. Store your supplements in a cool and dry environment away from humidity and sources of moisture!

5. Shake harder!
This is why we train at the gym right? Get some elbow grease and vigorously shake your bottle! Occasionally you can overcome stubborn clumps simply by shaking harder and for longer.

Mixer Ball Accessory.

At Pro Scoop our shaker bottles do not ship with a mixer ball. We found that the supplements we stock mix completely fine without the aid of a mixer ball, however we understand some people still prefer to use these. In an effort to reduce unnecessary waste we decided to sell these mixer balls as an optional extra. Our premium shaker bottles have also been specifically designed with generous, rounded corners so that powdered supplements do not clump or build up in the corners.
