Sick of LUMPY protein shakes that do not dissolve?
There’s no worse feeling than guzzling on a lumpy protein shake after a hard earned workout. The good news is we have a number of solutions that will take your stubborn protein lumps and bust them into a velvety smooth drink!
1. Not enough liquid.
You may need to check that your ratio of liquid to protein powder is correct. For example if you have mixed 3 scoops of protein into 150mLs of water you will be left with a very thick and difficult-to-blend consistency. If the protein drink becomes too thick the liquid will be completely saturated and the powder has no where to dissolve. In this instance, you may need to either add more water or reduce the amount of protein you’re mixing.
2. Split into separate batches.
Rather than blending multiple scoops in the one protein shake, you might be better off to split this into two separate batches. If you’ve over-filled your bottle there simply won’t be any space for the liquid/powder to mix and dissolve, therefore leaving you with clumps. Instead, try halving the serve and blending two separate, easier to manage batches.
3. Poor shaker bottle design.
Many shaker bottles have sharp corners and edges which don’t allow the mixer ball to reach and blend the problematic areas. Sharp corners are difficult to clean, but also encourage powdered supplements to get caught and wedged into difficult to reach areas. We suggest using a bottle which has generous corners which helps to facilitate correct supplement blending. At Pro Scoop we’ve designed a protein shaker bottle which ensures you can properly blend and drink velvety smooth supplements in seconds. The pentagonal shaped cup naturally helps to agitate liquid, which when compounded with a mixer ball will leave you drinking a delicious and clump free supplement drink.
4. Supplement choice.
Some supplements, depending on their production quality, haven’t had sufficient filtration and preparation which make them difficult to blend. In this instance the powder will be inherently clumpy and can’t be blended in to a smooth consistency. If you’re searching for a delicious and easy-to-blend protein alternative, we stock a range of premium plant-based supplements.
5. Moisture in Packaging.
It’s always good practice to ensure that you correctly close/re-seal your supplements after opening the packaging. The packaging serves as a barrier against moisture from getting into the powder, so it’s really important that you close the lid tightly or seal the zip-lock all the way. If moisture gets into your supplements it essentially begins the ‘blending’ process prematurely and will start clumping before you’ve even started mixing in your shaker bottle! Always store your supplements in a cool and dry environment, away from humidity and sources of moisture!
6. Order! Order! Order!
This may divide a lot supplement users, however we HIGHLY recommend filling your bottle with liquid first, then dropping the protein powder supplement on top.
If you place the protein powder first, this will cause the water to sit on top, and therefore the powder will compress into the bottom corners of the bottle under the weight of the water. Only the top layer of the powder will make contact with the water, which will form a ‘skin’, leaving the bottom layer of powder dry and unreachable/unmixable.
7. Shake harder!
This is why we train at the gym right? Get some elbow grease and vigorously shake your bottle! Occasionally you can overcome stubborn clumps simply by shaking harder and for longer.
8. Try using a Mixer Ball.
Mixer ball, Spring ball, Whisk ball, Agitator ball - these little balls have many different names, however they all serve the same purpose, which is to increase the speed at which protein/powdered supplements blend together with liquid. Mixer balls are designed to agitate and disturb liquid to encourage the powdered particles to mix and disperse as quickly as possible. The coiled spring allows enough liquid to pass through it while at the same time breaking down stubborn clumps of protein. At Pro Scoop we sell these as an optional accessory as we understand many supplement users already own one.
9. Read the instructions!
We understand nobody likes to read the instructions, who has time for that right? It may sound super simple, however it pays to read the back of your supplement packaging and follow their recommended water to powder ratio. Every powdered supplement is unique - Supplement brands have usually gone to a lot of effort to establish the exact amount of water-to-protein ratio. If their directions read ‘Mix 30 grams of protein into 250 mLs of water’, then you should follow this strictly!
10. Accuracy - Don’t use a tablespoon to measure supplements.
Measuring supplements can be a tricky business if you don’t have the right tools. Without knowing, you may be accidentally using too much protein powder in your protein shakes. You may have noticed that many supplement brands have phased out disposable/single-use plastic scoops from their packaging in an effort to reduce packaging waste. Instead they recommend using a tablespoon and will have serving instructions that read “mix approximately 2 tablespoons (40 grams) of protein powder into 250mLs of water” or similar. Is it a heaped tablespoon, is it a flat tablespoon? Did you know that every tablespoon has a different serving capacity depending on where you are in the world?
At Pro Scoop we’ve developed a premium shaker bottle that has a built-in measuring supplement scoop. The scoop has embossed measurement indicators which indicate 5,10,20 & 30 grams which allow you to conveniently and accurately measure powdered supplements every single time.
